Snow Storm this Past Sunday and Monday Ranked 4th Largest in Colorado

Will My Roof Collapse?

By Emilio Hernandez - March 17, 2021

The record setting snow in Colorado this past Monday poses some risks to your snow covered roofs but will it cave in?

With the total snow accumulation averaging about 27 inches across the front range the chances of your roof collapsing are slim due to the fact that properties here are well engineered to withstand heavy snow weight. It is a valid concern though and we should always be checking our roofs after any severe storm, since it is our homes' first line of defense against the elements.

Your roof however can be susceptible to other risks such as leaks, ice damming, and sagging gutters. Here are a few tips on what to do once the snow starts to melt.

Inspect the ceilings of your home. Look up and around to check for water droplets, yellowish stains, or sagging ceilings. If any of the above is happening you may have a roof leak.

Inspect your roof from the ground. Give your roof a good visual inspection to make sure it doesnt show signs of damage. Look for anything out of the ordinary that may be missing, curled, lifted, or sagging. If you have other buildings on your property such as a shed, carport, or a detached garage, make sure to check their roofs too. We do not recommend that you attempt to get on your roof.

Have your roof professionally inspected
. If you do notice any issues with your roof give us a call so that you can get an expert's opinion about the state of your roof. We will be able to diagnose and conduct any necessary repairs needed.

Check your gutters and downspouts too. After a big snow storm, damages are highly likely to the gutters and downspouts for various reasons such as poor installation practices, clogging, and heavy snow drafts. Look to see if your gutters are sagging or bending. Make sure your gutters and downspouts are firmly attached to your home. If your gutters are full of leafs and debris it will prevent your roof from disposing of melting snow which could lead to ice build up and leaks behind the gutter, around the fascia and soffit.
